Randall Michael Tobin presents Theta Sound Studio LIVE! — A chance to see amazing artists from the ’60s to the present!
TSS Live! is your ticket to hearing top artists, many of them from outside of L.A., hand-picked by award-winning music producer Randall Michael Tobin just for this series. For a nominal donation (all of which goes to the artists), you get admission to Theta Sound Studio’s main room to experience two artists, each performing their own set in an intimate environment. Additionally, your donation entitles you to receive one CD from each artist! (see below for details)
Parking is free and you may partake in the awesome food and drink that’s available before the concert and during intermission!
Seating in the main room is limited to 23 guests. But there are a few seats available in the control room where you can watch, listen, and see Randall Michael Tobin work his magic at the mixing console.
On Saturday, February 20th, TSS Live! kicks off 2016 with two seasoned singer / songwriter / educators who’ve been creating memorable music since the 70s and 60s: Michael Monagan plus Penny Nichols. MICHAEL MONAGAN and friends
Michael Monagan is perhaps best known for his award-winning work writing songs and producing albums for an internationally celebrated special needs band called the Kids of Widney High (KOWH-kidsofwidneyhigh.com), featured on CBS’s Sunday Morning, and NPR’s All Things Considered. Since retiring, however, Michael has embarked on a solo career releasing, Echo an album of original songs plus the cover, O-o-oh Child (which has had over 17,000 plays through 8tracks) and has formed a band currently performing in the LA area.
Michael has written songs that have been performed by a wide variety of artists from the folk music of four-time Grammy nominee John McCutcheon, to Hollywood Records teen group The Party and pop chanteuse Jennifer Warnes. Kid Cudi’s 2013 song Girls, a #3 Billboard Hot 100 smash hit, was a cover of his and the KOWH’s song Pretty Girls.
Michael has also put his skills as a multi-instrumentalist to work writing, producing and performing pieces of music for films such as the documentary Annie Leibovitz: Life Through a Lens, and director Henry Jaglom’s Deja Vu. The Farrelly Brothers 2005 movie The Ringer has two featured performances by Michael and the KOWH.

PENNY NICHOLS
Penny Nichols has shared stages with many legendary artists including Jackson Browne, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Ponies, Jennifer Warnes, Mary McCaslin and others. She’s performed in many clubs including: the Fillmore, the Avalon, the Matrix and opened for bands such as Big Brother and the Holding Co. (Janis Joplin), Steve Miller, Quicksilver Messenger Service, 13th Floor Elevator, Chocolate Watchband, Traffic, Blue Cheer, Mother Earth, Jefferson Airplane and others.
During the “Summer of Love”, Penny played at the Big Sur Folk Festival and recorded her first album, Penny’s Arcade, for Buddha Records (it eventually sold over 50,000 copies). She toured Europe in the winter of 1968, recording with George Harrison at Apple Studios while in London. In 1977, Penny joined Jimmy Buffett & the Coral Reefers and earned a Platinum Record for her singing on Son of a Son of a Sailor. During the same time, she recorded and toured with many performers including: Art Garfunkel (Fate for Breakfast), Suzi Quatro, Yvonne Elliman, Jennifer Warnes, Albert Brooks, the Credibility Gap, and toured with Arlo Guthrie, earning a Grammy nomination for her work on his album The Power of Love.
In 1990, Penny co-produced her second album, All Life is One. In 1991 she graduated from Harvard University with a doctorate in the psychology of music. In 1993 she released another record, an album of songs based on the 1000-year-old Buddhist stories called Songs of the Jataka Tales. In 1997, Penny and Molly Mason collaborated on the song The Unbroken Thread which is included on the CD, The Catskill Collection. Penny also produced a Harmony Singing Lessons CD which features Tom Prasada-Rao, Small Potatoes, Michael Monagan, Deborah McColl, Severin Browne, Penny Nichols and others.
In 2007 Penny wrote and released a book/CD, The 8 Voyages of Nep; Grieving & Healing through Chemotherapy. In 2012 Colors of the Sun: The early songs of Jackson Browne, was released.
Penny currently lives and teaches in Morro Bay, CA. Her most recent ventures include: just released new CD, Golden State; teaching at Moab Folk Camp; Lamb’s songwriting Retreat; Esalen with John Smith; and producing the conference for songwriters, SummerSongs: a Songwriters Summer Camp. Penny has also just been awarded the FAR-West Folk Alliance Best of the West, Lifetime Achievement Award for 2015.
