THE FABULOUS ‘FIFTIES!! It’s a group; it’s a glorious era in American music; it’s an event you’ll look back on with pleasure for decades to come. According to group organizer Tom Fair, “The 1950s may just have been the most diverse musical era of them all!”
The beginning of the decade saw The Weavers (with Pete Seeger) at their peak, enjoying a huge pop chart hit with Goodnight Irene. Country singers like Hank Williams and Patsy Cline were high on the charts, as well as smooth-singing vocalists like Dean Martin and Jo Stafford. Early Rock ‘n’ Roll, as popularized by Bill Haley, was actually a new form of swing – an echo of the Big Band era.
Vocal harmony was the order of the day, with everything from collegiate groups like The Four Preps to jumpin’ doo-wop and the silky harmonies of The Platters; and Harry Belafonte kept us in tune with the Caribbean islands.
The middle of the decade brought rockabilly and rhythm & blues together when Elvis exploded onto the scene along with Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and others – the decade went out with a rock and a roll!
Expect to hear a broad sampling of contemporary arrangements of million-selling tunes popularized by many of the above artists.
THE FABULOUS ‘FIFTIES is: vocalist/guitarist Tom Fair, vocalists Lauren Perreau, Rick Solomon and Ed Pausic on bass. It is rumored that April Snow (Tom’s daughter and lead singer for the Looking for Trouble blues band) and her band’s guitarist, Greg Conte, will make a special guest appearance at this show!
